Illegals…get out of Dodge!

Posted by nebraskaobserver on May 23, 2008

Here’s some interesting comments posted this morning in the Dodge City, KS news regarding a previous story (“City officials told area has no need for immigration office,” May 16).  Dodge City is sometimes called the meat packing capital of the United States, with close to 11000 cattle being processed a day.  Wonder what the real percentage is in Schuyler, Lexington, Madison and Sioux City ?  Nebraska immigration enthusiasts/open-border nuts can only hope for these numbers!

I would rather see an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in SW Kansas and enforce the law. Deport anyone illegal. Traveling to Wichita is a minor inconvenience if they want to be legal, naturalized citizens. If an employer wants to keep their help, they can accommodate that request. Perhaps the employer should pay hefty fines if they are employing illegal help.

“By the way … Senator Roberts tried to get the office, and he comes to SW Kansas quite often. It was the immigration office in Washington that refused him. I agree that these illegals or immigrants are people too, but they need to respect our laws and culture, which they currently do not.”

“Here’s my real question about this topic: How can the Hispanic population in Dodge City be ‘46%,’ (according to Rick Sowers) when our public schools are recording the Hispanic student population anywhere between 85-95 percent? I’m no math whiz, but those numbers don’t sound right. I believe the schools have the more accurate count, and besides that, all you have to do is look around town to see the truth!”

85 sentenced in Postville immigration raid
Associated Press – May 20, 2008 10:44 AM ET

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) – Federal prosecutors say 85 people arrested in last week’s immigration raid at a meatpacking plant in Postville have been sentenced on federal charges.

They are part of a group of nearly 400 people arrested at the Agriprocessors plant.

They pleaded guilty yesterday in Waterloo. The U.S. attorney’s office says it’s the largest number of defendants to plead guilty and be sentenced in one day.

Officials say 77 pleaded guilty to using false identification to obtain employment. They admitted using the ID of an actual person and were sentenced to five months in prison and face deportation.

Eight others pleaded guilty to using a false ID to obtain employment, but those documents did not belong to an actual person. They were sentenced to five years probation and ordered out of the country.
