People should petition

Thomas Jefferson wrote, “Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” But it seems that governing bodies fail to understand that important fact.

A May 29 headline, “Trustees oppose petition push,” seems to indicate that government does not understand that its duty is to abide by the wishes of the people. A June editorial took the same view as the headline in opposing two current petition drives.

Indeed, our petition process is a mess, and I believe the Legislature and news organizations are to blame for it. A petition is just that. If the required signatures are collected, the people must approve it at the polls.
