Legal vs. illegal

Here are some thoughts on the June 8 Sunday World-Herald article about Mayte, the illegal immigrant who has been in the United States since her parents brought her into this country when she was 7 years old:

· Mayte’s boyfriend should realize that people like me are not anti-immigration. We are anti-illegal immigration. There is a difference.

· Listed above Omaha immigration lawyer Amy Peck’s statement that Mayte “doesn’t have any avenue to legalize” are at least three options for legalization. Not having an easy option is not the same as having one.

· Regarding Mayte’s concerns that her legal options for citizenship will take years to complete: Mayte has been in the United States for 11 years. She and her parents have had all of that time to at least get started on the legalization process.

In an ideal world, Mayte would not suffer the sins of her parents. However, ours in not an ideal world, and the responsibility for making things right rest squarely with Mayte’s parents…ones who broke the law..and now with Mayte.

Based on her statement at the end of the article, it seems she is counting on Congress to give her a free pass.
