Becoming bilingual

As a citizen of this English-speaking country, I cannot rationalize why I should have to “Press 1 for English” when calling some businesses on the telephone.
To whom do these businesses think they are doing a service? Certainly not Spanish-speaking people, who are being deprived of another opportunity to learn English. And certainly not long-standing English-speaking customers.
One, day, when our rights are gone, will we be saying, “How did it come to this?” In reality, it has been going on for some time. We were just too busy to voice our opinion.
