An illegal Guatemalan alien, Mauro Yos-Chiguil, was sentenced to 18 to 20 years in prison for attempting to kill his girlfriend in a bloody November attack in north Kearney. Court records say Yos was drunk in the early morning hours of Nov. 30, 2007 when he came home to the apartment he shared with the woman. Yos became upset with his girlfriend when he asked her to come into the bedroom where he was drinking.
When the woman didn’t respond, Yos grabbed a knife from the dining room table and stabbed the woman in the head, shoulder, chest and stomach. (That’s probably their local custom in Guatemala when the bitch doesn’t respond! Shouldn’t we should respect other cultures customs?)
The woman’s teenage sister grabbed one of the boys, while the woman’s younger niece tried to stop Yos from stabbing the woman.
Public defender, Jeff Wirth of Kearney said “he just lost his mind,” said Wirth. Yos has only a third-grade education and Wirth isn’t convinced Yos completely understands the seriousness of his actions. (When all else fails, pull out the victim card! Why do we allow uneducated people to stay in the U.S.?)
Yos will be eligible for parole in 9½ years and could be discharged in 16 years. However, the Guatemalan also is being held on an Immigration Customs Enforcement warrant. Typically, ICE doesn’t take illegal immigrants into custody until they have completed their state sentence. (The Nebraska Observer would like to know if the ICE warrant was in force prior to Yos arrest or it is a new warrant. Also, how about the nationality and citizenship of the girlfriend and her relatives? Enquiring minds want to know.) Kearney Hub story
